Hand tracking is currently less precise than controllers for fast or complex actions (like throwing objects accurately or pressing small buttons). It can also get tired during long sessions because you have to hold your hands up more often.

Using Hand Tracking in Projects

In Unity, the XR Interaction Toolkit makes it relatively easy to support both hand tracking and controllers in the same project. You can start with controller-based interactions and later add hand tracking as an optional mode.

Common hand interactions include pinching to grab, pointing to select, open-hand gestures for menus, and two-handed manipulation for scaling or rotating objects.

For your early projects, support both controllers and hand tracking. Let users choose whichever feels better for them. Start simple — make a few objects you can pick up with a pinch gesture, then gradually add more natural interactions. Test frequently in the headset because hand tracking performance can vary depending on lighting and hand position.

As you get more comfortable, you can explore advanced uses like sign language recognition, precise manipulation tools, or combining hand tracking with ML models for even better accuracy.
